  11.        uunews:/group/.overview

  13. DESCRIPTION
  14.        Each   newsgroup   directory   contains   a   file   named
  15.        `.overview', containing one-line summaries of articles  in
  16.        that group.  Fields are separated by tabs, and any tabs or
  17.        newlines  in  the  original  articles  headers  have  been
  18.        replaced with spaces.  The fields are, in order:

  20.        1. article number (file name)
  21.  
  22.        2. subject
  23.  
  24.        3. author
  25.  
  26.        4. date
  27.  
  28.        5. message-id
  29.  
  30.        6. references
  31.  
  32.        7. byte count
  33.  
  34.        8. line count
  35.  
  36.        9...
  37.           optionally other headers, as arranged locally (none are
  38.           supplied  by  the  database  maintenance  software,  as
  39.           shipped).

  41.        The line-count and references fields may be empty.  If the
  42.        optional other headers are  present,  they  include  their
  43.        header keyword and colon; if they are absent entirely, the
  44.        tab after the line-count field may also be absent.

  46.        The file is maintained in numerical order, by article num-
  47.        ber.

  49.        At  the  time  of  writing  (late  1992),  the lines in an
  50.        overview file are typically 150-300 characters  long,  and
  51.        an  overview  file  for  a  typically  busy group is often
  52.        30,000 bytes to 60,000 bytes long, with notable exceptions
  53.        exceeding 500,000 bytes.

  87.        The  contents  of  the  line-count  field  should  not  be
  88.        believed and are really pretty worthless yet popular.
  89.  
  90.        There  is  some confusion about whether the order and con-
  91.        tent of the first eight fields is a local decision,  or  a
  92.        standard.   It's  intended to be a standard; please do not
  93.        mess with it.  All, repeat all, local variations should be
  94.        done  by  adding the optional fields at the end, and those
  95.        fields must include their header keywords (and colons)  to
  96.        make them self-identifying.
